- Request for proposals are invited for Promoting Water Desalination using Solar Energy Technologies in Egypt. The main objective of this consultancy is to assess the financial and technical feasibility of utilizing Egypt-s abundant solar energy, mature and existing photovoltaic market and the progress and efforts done by both the private sector and the government in the last decade and integrate these in order to supply electricity for water desalination plants in Egypt. This consultancy aims to define and analyze challenges in such a field and make a comprehensive comparison between the cost of water desalinated by solar energy using different available feasible technologies and conventional resources of energy which will affect the water price per cubic meter. Under the direct supervision of PMU, IMC and the support of UNDP Egypt, the consultant will be responsible for the following tasks: 1. Review the available water desalination technologies with focus on solar energy, particularly those new technologies with most energy savings. 2. Evaluate the various solar energy technologies to power water desalination plants, in particular, photovoltaic systems without or with storage, Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) 3. Review of the energy demand for water desalination plants for different water salinity concentrations including energy required by each system component 4. Prepare a comprehensive comparison between the cost of water desalinated by solar energy using different available feasible technologies and conventional resources of energy which will affect the water price per cubic meter in five locations in Egypt including Elhamam, Red sea. 5. Identify the challenges that face continuous water supply from water desalination plant (e.g. the need for all-day energy to power reverse osmosis, land, access to the sea, saline ground water pumping, etc...) 6. Conduct one day workshops to Egypt-PV project team and project partners about the water desalination in general, water desalination by solar energy, new technologies and market potentials. 7. Identify and evaluate the challenges and the opportunities in the Egyptian market for SMEs to startup solar energy water desalination companies or add it to their business portfolio. 8. Conduct a financial study showing Capex and Opex and the impact of the capex amortized over the contract life time VS the power payment reduction in all cases of studies.
